The purpose of the Foundation's awards was to encourage schools across the Great Barrier Reef catchment to continue to promote and pursue environmental sustainability and broader conservation outcomes in their schools and their communities to help protect the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem.

Four award categories were offered by the Virginia Chadwick Memorial Foundation to Reef Guardian Schools.

  • A $1000 Reef Champions Award to acknowledge secondary school projects that protect the Great Barrier Reef, promote conservation of the Reef and encourage the students, school and/or community to take stewardship actions to protect their environment.
  • A $1000 Reef Action and Awareness Award to encourage primary school projects that protect the Reef, promote conservation of the Reef and encourage the students, school and/or community to take stewardship actions to protect their environment.
  • A $500 Future Environmental Leader Award to recognise an individual student from a Reef Guardian School for outstanding commitment to protecting the Reef and raising awareness about the Reef. 
  • A $1000 Outstanding Environmental Leader to recognise a member of the school community in a Reef Guardian School for outstanding achievement/s improving the sustainability of their environment and/or local area. This award is open for both primary schools and high schools to apply on behalf of an individual they would like to nominate.

The overall judging criteria for the awards were the four key areas for the Foundation:

  • Environmental Activities which contribute to the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Environmental Education which raises awareness in the broader community about the functions and values of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Environmental Partnerships which demonstrate collaboration between the school and organisations within their community to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Indigenous Engagement which supports and promotes Indigenous groups to manage their land and sea country and protect their cultural values.
